Calcium Format Chemical Reactions
 
Calcium formate can be used to prepare solutions of other water-soluble formate salts. For example, the addition of nickel (II) sulfate to a solution of calcium formate results in the precipitation of insoluble calcium sulfate, leaving nickel (II) formate in solution:
 
Ca(OOCH)2 + NiSO1 → CaSO4 + Ni(OOCH)2
 
In a similar reaction, sulfuric acid reacts with calcium formate to provide low-cost solutions of formic acid:
 
Ca(OOCH)2 + H2 SO4 → CaSO4 + 2HCOOH
 
When heated, calcium formate decomposes to calcium carbonate and formaldehyde:
 
Ca(OOCH)2 → CaCO3 + HCHO
 
Continued heating at higher temperatures results in the breakdown of these decomposition products:
 
HCHO → CO + H2
 
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
 
Calcium formate can be used as a low-cost reducing agent in the conversion of carboxylic acids to aldehydes. This process is an effective substitute for the troublesome Rosenmund reduction.

Toxicity
 
Calcium formate has a low order of toxicity. In rats, the acute oral LD50 is 2650mg / kg; by intravenous injection, the LD50 is 154mg / kg.
In a study with rats, calcium formate added to the drinking water at 0.2% for 3 years or 0.4% for 2 years didn’t affect growth, fertility or function in up to 5 generations. Calcium formate would be expected to be irritating to the eyes and skin. In case of eye contact, immediately flush the eyes with water for 15 minutes. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure of the skin.

Shipping, Handling & Storage
 
Calcium formate is available in 50lb and 25kg multi-wall paper bags and 500lb mini sacks. Super sacks containing 1000kg (2205lb) are also available. It is non-hygroscopic and if stored in a dry area no degradation should occur. Shelf-life is minimum 3 years after production date if stored according to material safety data sheet handling instructions in the original unopened container. The NPFA Hazardous Materials Identification System rating for calcium formate is: Health Hazard - 1; Flammability - 1; Reactivity - 0. This rating indicates that calcium formate is a minimal hazardous substance. Calcium formate is classified as “DOT not regulated” by the US Department of Transportation. Calcium formate is listed on the Chemical Substance Inventory under the US Toxic Substances Control Act, on the Canadian DSL and on the European Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances. Calcium Format Uses
 
Leather Tanning
 
Calcium formate is used extensively in the leather industry as a masking agent in the chrome-tanning process. The addition of calcium formate to the tannage formulation promotes faster, more efficient penetration of the chrome in the leather. Calcium formate can also be used as a replacement for formic acid in the pickling operation.
 
Cement Additive
 
As an additive to grouts and cement, calcium formate imparts a number of properties desirable in the final product, e.g. increased hardness and decreased setting time in comparison to ordinary cements. The addition of calcium formate is desirable for work at low temperature and for inhibition of corrosion of metal substrates. It is also effective in the prevention of efflorescence. When used in gypsum board, calcium formate functions as a fire retardant.
 
Silage Treatment
 
Calcium formate is commonly used as a component of an ensiling agent for silage treatment. The use of calcium formate in the silage suppresses the formation of side reaction products such as propionic acid, while promoting the formation of desirable lactic acid in anaerobic fermentation.
 
Gas Generation
 
A mixture of calcium formate with ammonium nitrate or with chlorate, perchlorate, peroxide, superoxide or permanganate of an alkali metal will rapidly evolve large volumes of gas when ignited. Flue-gas Desulfurization
 
SOx is abated in the flue-gases from the burning of high-sulfur fuel oil if the oil has been emulsified with a solution containing calcium formate before burning. As much as 95% of the SOx is removed.
 
Safety Explosives
Calcium formate can be used as the fuel component in explosives designed to have improved deflagration behaviour. Such explosives are suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres often encountered in coalmines.
 
De- icing agent
 
Mixtures of Calcium Formate with urea are excellent agents for the melting of ice. Less corrosion of steel and cement surfaces is observed than with other de-icers.
 
Other uses
 
Calcium formate can be used as an additive to improve solution stability of various resins, as a corrosion inhibitor in moulding and wire-drawing operations, or as a catalyst in place of calcium acetate.
 
Buffered solutions
 
Buffered solutions exhibiting a range of pH values can be obtained by varying the ratio of formic acid to the salt as in table below:

Animal Feed Additive
 
Calcium formate is an organic salt suitable for use in pig and poultry diets. It acts as a feedstock preservative and has an acidifying effect on the gastro-intestinal tract, which promotes good gut-health. The efficiency of pig and poultry feedstock digestion is dependent on the indigenous micro-organism concentration in the gastro-intestinal tract. With the approaching ban on the use of prophylactic antibiotics in animal feed as a means to control disease and promote growth, alternatives are needed to limit the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the gut which can impair feedstock digestion as well as cause enteric diseases such as E. Coli and Salmonella. Acidifiers such as calcium formate preserve the feedstock before consumption and lower the pH in the gastro-intestinal tract, creating unfavourable conditions for these bacteria to grow.

Remarks:

METHOD OF USE
1. Properly clean the system with water and alkaline liquid, if necessary.
2. Add 0 .15-1.5 % of RXSOL CIDC in the system or recommended Nitrite level 1400 – 2500 ppm can be measured and controlled by any standard RXSOL test kit for Nitrite, Chloride test also helps to detect excess contamination to maintain acceptable levels. when the product is dosed as recommended limit By buffering action of RXSOL CIDC, pH should be maintained between 8.3 and 10 by the treatment.

1. Prolong the life of equipment by keeping scale and corrosion free. Since RXSOL CIDC is alkaline and so will suppress acid corrosion, which would otherwise result in corrosion damage such as pitting. However, the alkalinity control is such that even if the product accidentally overdoses, the pH of the water will remain within limits. The metals which would be affected by extremes of alkalinity or acidity are protected.

A pre-determined quantity of activated carbon is added to a solution and after stirring for a certain contact time mostly at elevated temperature carbon is filtered out or to get sparkling color free solutions from which product are recovered.  it is pertinent to mention that use of powdered activated carbon apart from decolonization  imparts several other benefits like longer shelf life, truer, and bolder crystals, closer melting and boiling points etc.


GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBON  :–

Granular activated carbons are mostly made from Coconut Shells on petroleum coke, bituminous coal or lignite. Granular activated carbon is used in continuous process in areas like water treatment (drinking & effluent water), removal of mercury from effluents or alkali cells, solvent recovery, gold recovery, removal of odour, gas masks, as catalyst carrier, for decholorination of water, purification & separation of gases, kitchen hoods, dry cleaning etc. 

ACTIVATED CARBON It is known that removal of impurities from liquids or gases by Activated Carbon is by adsorption. But only a thin layer if molecules is enough to neutralize the residual attraction of the outer carbon atoms, which then cannot be adsorb any further molecules and carbon is said to be exhausted. It is however possible to make carbon porous. In this way many countless are created and internal surface area is increased. Many more carbon atoms are then exposed to the surroundings resulted in more molecules from surroundings can be attracted. The carbon is more active and hence called “Activated Carbon”. One gram of ground carbon has an external surface area of 2 to 4 square meters, whereas when carbon has been activated this one gram of carbon may acquire an internal surface area of more one thousand square meters. 

PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON Activated carbon can be produced from many raw materials i.e. Soft wood, Coconut shell, Peat lignite (Both mineral & coal). The raw material must be relatively low cost and source of raw material should be closed to the factory location to minimize the transport cost. We are using Soft wood & Coconut shell charcoal as raw material in our factory. 

PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING: 

1. STEAM ACTIVATED PROCESS: The majority of Activated Carbon used through out the world is produced by two stage process. Firstly the material is carbonized and cock is produced. The pores of produced cock are too small; hence, the next is a process of enlarging the pore structure so that an accessible internal surface is created. This is achieved by semi product with steam at temperature between 900o C to 1200o C. At this temperature rate determination factor is the chemical reaction between steam and carbon. This reaction takes place at the internal surface of the carbon removing carbon from the pore walls and there by enlarging them. Opening up the pore structure is costly as the yield decreases and extra heat is required. e.g. In the purification of water for the adsorption of small molecules from solution. This carbon is cheaper compare to sugar decolorizing carbon where large molecules are to be removed. Thus, steam activation process allows the pore size to be altered and finally carbon can be made to suit different purpose.

Decolorisation The amount of colorants that can be removed from a solution by activated carbon depends on factors such as contact time, carbon dosage, temperature, concentration or viscosity of the solution and the intrinsic features of the carbon itself. A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the type of activated carbon on the percent color removed from a melt sugar liquor in sugar mill. The commercial carbon CCOAL had a capacity to remove 18% color. while Granular Carbon Tech Grade had the best decolourising power, which effectively removed 29.79% color

An activated carbon product can be characterized by its activity and physical properties. Activity properties include pore size distribution that defines the available pore volume of a carbon over three pore size regions: the micropore, mesopore, and macropore regions:
 
Micropore region - less than 100 Angstroms
Mesopore region - between 100 and 1,000 Angstroms
Macropore region - greater than 1,000 Angstroms
Pore size distribution properties are key indicators of a carbon's potential performance for removing contaminants (adsorbates) from water. The molecules encountered in the gas phase are generally smaller than those in the liquid phase applications; therefore, a gas phase carbon has the majority of its pores concentrated in the micropore region.
 
A broad range of pore sizes must be available, both for ease of movement of adsorbates through the carbon pores and for the adsorption of particular molecular sizes. Liquid phase carbons often contain a broader pore size distribution to remove color bodies and larger organic materials, while maintaining some microporosity for the removal of taste and odor compounds.
 
Physical properties include surface area, product density, mesh size, abrasion resistance, and ash content.

Iodine Number - standard testing done to estimate the surface area of the activated carbon by measuring iodine adsorption at a given set of standard testing conditions, reported in mg I2 adsorbed per gram carbon
 
Surface Area - amount of surface available for adsorption for a given mass of carbon, measured using techniques such as BET nitrogen adsorption; reported in units of m2/g
 
Product Density - several properties available, including apparent density which is the density of the carbon at maximum packing efficiency, reported in g/cc or lbs/cf
 
Mesh Size - measure of particle range of the granular product, usually reported as a range of sieve openings, such as 12 x 40 for a carbon that passes a 12 mesh screen, but is retained on a 40 mesh screen with a specification on the amount that can be retained on the larger opening screen or passing the smaller opening screen; basis is US sieve sizes Abrasion Number - measure of the ability of the carbon product to resist attrition; this important property permits one to understand how durable the activated carbon is in applications where backwashing is required, carbon will be transferred, or treatment velocities are above average
 
Ash Level - a measure of the non-carbon content of the activated carbon; all base materials have a certain ash constituency, with the content varying from base material to base material; for example, coconut shell carbon tends to have more alkali earth metals, while coal-based carbons have more heavy metals

HPNA removal in hydrocracking units: Higher polynuclear aromatics (HPNAs) occur as a result of hydrocracking, and they cause coke formation, deactivation of catalysts, equipment fouling and reduced product yields.
