Interfering substance

Interference level Metals Some metals, especially copper, catalyze the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate. Immediately add  TK - 14 ::: RXSOL-62-5503-003 powder for each liter of sample during sample collection to prevent the interference.

Remarks:

Samples must be analyzed immediately after collection and cannot be preserved for later analysis. 

Let the sample temperature decrease to 50 °C (122 °F) or less before analysis. 

Sulfite reacts quickly with oxygen in the air. Shaking or swirling the sample causes low results. Prevent agitation of the sample during the procedure. 

Review safety chemical handling procedure. Use the recommended personal protective equipment. Dispose of reacted solutions according to local, state and federal regulations. Thumb rule for Hydarzine dose is, Low pressure boiler required high dose of Hydrazine ( 0.1 to 0.2 ppm level of hydrazine ) While for High pressure boiler low dose of hydrazine required (0.05 to 0.1ppm value)
 
Recommended dose of Hydrazine :

Low Pressure Boiler ( 0 to 40 bar )

0.10 to 0.2  ppm level  

Medium Pressure Boiler ( 41 to 60 bar )

Toxic effects of Hydrazine ( which is collected in sample ) is a severe skin and mucous membrane irritant in humans; in animals.In humans, the vapor is immediately irritating to the nose and throat and causes dizziness and nausea; itching, burning, and swelling of the eyes develop over a period of several hours. Severe exposures of the eyes to the vapors causes temporary blindness lasting for about 24 hours. Recurrent exposure to hydrazine hydrate has been reported to cause contact dermatitis of the hands without systemic intoxication. In humans, hydrazine is absorbed through the skin, by inhalation, and orally; systemic effects include weight loss, weakness, vomiting, excited behavior, and convulsions; the chief histologic findings are fatty degeneration of the liver and nephritis.

No interference up to 10 mg/L. May cause a positive interference of up to 20% at 20 mg/L.      

Highly colored or turbid samples

Prepare a 1:1 mixture of deionized water and household bleach. Add one drop of this mixture to 25 mL of sample in a graduated mixing cylinder and invert to mix. This will destroy any hydrazine in the sample. Use this solution, instead of deionized water, to prepare the blank in the test procedure.

 
Morpholine No interference up to 10 mg/L.

Accuracy Test : 

Standard solution method

Use the standard solution method to validate the test procedure, the reagents and the instrument. Items to collect:

1. Hydrazine sulfate, reagent grade

2. 1-L volumetric flask, Class A (2)

3. 10-mL volumetric pipet, Class A and pipet filler

4. Deionized water, oxygen-free

Preparation Method : 

Prepare a 25-mg/L hydrazine stock solution as follows:
Add 0.1016 g of hydrazine sulfate into a 1-L volumetric flask. Dilute to the mark with oxygen-free deionized water (heat water to boiling and cool). Mix well. Prepare the stock solution each day.

Prepare a 0.25-mg/L (250-μg/L) hydrazine standard solution as follows:
Use a pipet to add 10.00 mL of the 25-mg/L hydrazine stock solution into a 1-L volumetric flask.

Dilute to the mark with oxygen-free deionized water. Mix well. Prepare the standard solution immediately before use.

Use the test procedure to measure the concentration of the prepared standard solution.

Compare the expected result to the actual result.

Note: The factory calibration can be adjusted slightly with the standard adjust option so that the instrument shows the expected value of the standard solution. The adjusted calibration is then used for all test results. This adjustment can increase the test accuracy when there are slight variations in the reagents or instruments.

PRINCIPLE of Hydrazine TEST for Boiler water and Water:::

Under acidic conditions, hydrazine combines with Hydrazine Test Reagent TK - 17 to form a yellow- colored complex. Color development follows and is stable after maximum color is developed in 10 to 15 minutes. 

Where Hydrazine Test Kit used ?

HYDRAZINE TEST KIT is used for the determination of Hydrazine content in the Boiler’s Water. The test must be performed when in the vessel’s Boiler Water Treatment used hydrazine ingredient to control rust and corrosion RXSOL-50-5022-025 / RXSOL-50-5007-025 / RXSOL-19-1541-025. This is an activated hydrazine solution (Hydrazine with a catalyst for faster reaction with Dissolved Oxygen,) and applied for marine and industrial Boilers in low, medium and high pressures. 

Benefit of Hydrazine Test Kit ?
Following the procedure above, the concentration in ppm of Hydrazine in the Boiler Water will be obtained. According to the Boiler’s working conditions, and the results obtained the dosage of Oxygen Scavenger / Hydrazine must be adjusted considering the dose chart. For effective boiler water treatment with Hydrazine and in order to avoid any problem of Oxygen corrosion, the test at the initial period of use of RXSOL Oxygen Scavenger must be performed every day. Once a small concentration of Hydrazine obtained in the Boiler water then the test could be repeated every 2–3 days.

Limitation of Hydrazine Dose ?

Control of Hydarazine level in Boiler water is very important.  As proper level maintenance protect metal machinery parts from corrosion, However, precautions must be taken to prevent excess dose of hydrazine chemical as excess hydrazine will begin to decompose at temperature above 200oC to form Ammonia.

Hydrazine is one of popular an alternative Oxygen Scavenger. It is very important to protect boiler components from feed boiler water corrosion. 

Precaution : Strictly observe the temperature and reaction time since they strongly affect the color intensity. The measurement must be taken in 5 min and not before or later, and preferably at the temperature of 20oC - 25oC.

Estimation of chloride as silver chloride in a given solution

To estimate chloride as silver chloride in the given solution of sodium chloride or hydrochloric acid.

Principal: The estimation of a soluble chloride is carried out by precipitating it as silver chloride in the presence of nitric acid using silver solution as a precipitating agent.

Cl- + Ag+ AgCl

The white curdy precipitate of silver chloride is filtered, washed with dil. nitric acid, dried and weighed.
Solution: Prepare a solution by dissolving 4.9g or 6.53 g or 8.157 g of sodium chloride per litre. 25 ml of such a solution will yield 0.3, or 0.4 or 0.5 g of AgCl residue respectively.

Reagents.

(a) Precipitating reagent : It is 0.1 N AgNO3 solution which is prepared by dissolving 4.22 g of silver nitrate (A.R.) in 250 ml of distilled water. (b) Washing solution : (i) One is 0.1N HNO3 which is prepared by adding 3 ml of conc. nitric acid (A.R.) to 497 ml of water, making the total volume 500 ml (ii) Other is 0.01N HNO3 which is prepared by adding 10 ml of 0.1N HNO3 (prepared as above) to 90 ml water making the total volume as 100 ml.

Procedure

(i) Precipitation : Measure out 25 ml of the given solution in a 500 ml beaker. To this add 50 ml of distilled water and 1 ml of conc. nitric acid (A.R.). Warm the solution at 700C and add 0.1N silver nitrate solution slowly with vigorous, constant stirring until precipitation is complete. Avoid a large excess of silver nitrate and carry out all operations in subdued light. Now wrap the beaker with a thick brown paper. Keep the beaker on a water bath for few minutes until the ppt. settles down and the supernatant liquid becomes clear. Allow the solution to cool a little and test the supernant liquid with a little more silver nitrate solution to ensure that precipitation is complete. If a ppt. appears, add more silver nitrate till the supernatant liquid yields a ppt. Again heat the beaker to 70 – 800 C

and stir constantly to coagulate the ppt. In case no ppt. appears, there is no need for adding excess of silver nitrate. After doing this test for complete precipitation, heat the beaker on a water bath. Cover the beaker with a watch glass and keep it about 25 minutes. Cool the beaker and keep it in dark for 1 hour to allow the ppt. to settle down.

(ii) Filtration and washing : Now transfer the supernatant liquid through a sintered glass crucible G – 3 previously cleaned, heated in an oven and weighed after cooling in a desiccator. Wash the ppt. by decantation 3 – 4 times with 0.1N HNO3 and the transfer the ppt. from the beaker to the crucible using a policeman to remove any adhering ppt. from the sides of the beaker. Now wash the ppt. in the crucible by 0.1N HNO3 until washings are free from Ag+ ions (when few-drops of dil. HCl are added to 10 – 15 drops of the filtrate, no turbidity should appear). Finally, wash

the ppt. with cold distilled water twice to free it from NO-
(iii) Drying and weighing : Dry the ppt. by keeping the crucible in an electric oven at 110 – 1200C for an hour. Allow the crucible to cool in a desiccator and weight it. Repeat the heating and cooling until constant weight is obtained.

Calculations

The constant weight of the crucible = a g
The constant weight of the crucible AgCl = b g 
Weight of  AgCl = (b – a ) g 
Now AgCl ( 143.34 )  = Cl-  ( 35.46 ) = NaCl ( 58.46 )

Here Simple Calculation is :  143.34 g of AgCl = 35.46 g of chloride

(b–a)gofAgCl = 35.46/143.34x(b–a)g of chloride or 25 ml of the given solution contains

= 35.46/143.34 ( b – a ) g of chloride  

Amount of Cl- ion present in one liter of the solution

= 35.46/143.34 x( b – a )x1000/25
= 35.46 x( b – a ) x40 / 143.34 g
 

Similarly, the strength of NaCl solution in g/liter of the solution
= 58.46 x( b – a ) x 40 / 143.34 g

Remarks:

Wear safety glasses. The working area must be well ventilated to prevent the build-up of toluene vapour. Make sure that any sources of ignition, such as Bunsen burners, hot plates and hot air guns, are removed before you start work.

Eye contact: Immediately flush the eye with plenty of water. Continue for at least ten minutes and call for medical help. Skin contact: Wash off with soap and water. Remove any contaminated clothing. If the skin reddens or appears damaged, call for medical aid. Note that clothes soaked in toluene will be very flammable, so should be removed in an area in which there is no risk that they might catch fire. If swallowed: Call for immediate medical help.

For chlorination of swimming pools, sewage and waste water.Standard tablet size: 75 mm diameter - 25 mm H. For swimming pool water treatment: 4 large tablets every 100 m3 of water to be put in skimmers or in floating trays. For waste water treatment, fill the chlorinating pipes until 2 to 5 PPM of residual active chlorine are obtained. If below 2 PPM, use both chlorinating pipes. Assess residual chlorine level with the appropriate TEST KIT supplied by Rx Marine International Rxsol Chlorine Test kit.

Dose:

The tablet is dosed to the water supply tank preferably suspended away from the fabric of the tank. The tablets should not be allowed to rest on the bottom of metal tanks. Being in tablet form this is a safer method of administering chlorine than the usual liquid preparations. When used as part of a planned programme of protection it will assist in control of problems associated with such areas as bacterial and organic foulingincluding legionnaires disease.

Dose Rate:

Rates will be determined by the extent of current problems. An initial dose will be required to give a free residual chlorine reserve of 5-50ppm for a minimum of 1 hour. Thereafter a reserve of 0.5-2.0ppm is normally sufficient. Also available as rapid dissolving (Bechlor 126RD) 1 tablet will give 50ppm chlorine in 3.6m3 water.
