Chemical feed should be continuous. Chemical pumping rates can create problems especially for neat feed set ups. Using on/off feed systems such as a recycle timer can create problems. Chemical feed pumps should be sized or product strengths should be adjusted to allow continuous feed.

Steam and carbon dioxide leave continuously, so setting up a neutralizing amine pump to feed intermittently can lead to wide variations in condensate pH control. If sampling is done from a condensate receiver, the tank volume may buffer the variations and the changes may not be noticed, but corrosion could be occurring to areas of the piping that see the rapidly changing pH.


If polymeric dispersants, phosphonates, phosphate, or chelants are fed intermittently into the feedwater using a recycle timer, and the amines are not fed continuously, a cycle of iron slugs returning in the condensate can be followed by slugs of high dispersancy cleaning of the iron from the deaerator and dragging it into the boiler.

Load changes can affect chemical concentrations when the chemical feed is base fed. Example: Steam production of one million lbs./day; 4% blowdown; 20% active boiler polymer product fed at 5 pounds per day. The calculated daily average polymer concentration would be 24 ppm. Assume peak plant production load is 60,000 lbs./hr., but during the overnight hours the load is only 5,000 lbs./hr. If the dispersant is being fed continuously over the 24 hours, during the 8- hour low load period, the boiler polymer concentration would have increased to over 200 ppm. Upon high fire when production resumes, carryover is very possible because of over concentrating the polymeric dispersant.

Chemical feed needs to be paced to steam production, especially where significant load changes occur.

Carbon dioxide can concentrate in steam and condensate making neutralizing amine treatment impractical. Carbon dioxide levels can be relatively low in steam exiting a boiler at only a few ppm, but if there are areas where it becomes “trapped” and can accumulate, concentrations can reach extremely high levels into the hundreds or even thousands of ppm.

CO2 is a non-condensable gas. It has a distribution ratio in the steam piping and condenses at points throughout the system. At the boiling point, the solubility of the gas in water is extremely low. The solubility of the CO2 is actually lower in the condensate than it is in the steam. For the CO2 to escape from the steam into the water it will accumulate in the steam space just above the water level until the partial pressure becomes high enough for the CO2 in the incoming steam to be able to exit into the condensate. This creates a steady state condition of CO2 coming in and exiting, but an area of severe localized corrosion occurs where the carbon dioxide concentration is high.

The highest CO2 concentration normally occurs just above the condensate water level. If there is an area where condensation is occurring and running down pipes or the sides of vessels, the CO2 concentration will be very high and the pH will be about 5.3 – 5.5 in that location creating high corrosion rates.


The solubility of CO2 increases dramatically as the condensate temperature falls below 212 °F. When there is an accumulation of CO2 in an area and the condensate temperature is relatively low, the amount of carbon dioxide going into solution will be extremely high. Where low-pressure steam is used that contains CO2 and the heat exchange process has relatively close temperature differentials between the steam and the condensate, there is potential for high uptake of the CO2 into the condensate and localized low pH.

Neutralizing amines are selected in an effort to condense in the right concentrations to carbon dioxide condensation levels throughout the steam system. Neutralizing amines cannot control corrosion where this localized accumulation of carbon dioxide occurs since the high CO2 overwhelms the demand for the amine. Even point source addition of amine may not be able to satisfy the demand.

Where the concentrating effect of CO2 occurs, methods of reducing the problem include eliminating or minimizing CO2 in the steam, venting off the CO2 in the localized area, eliminating condensate in the area, applying a filming amine or metal passivator, or using higher temperature steam and increasing condensate temperature to reduce the CO2 content in the condensate.

TESTING PROCEDURE :::
ANLYSIS PROCEDEURE OF SODIUM SILICATE : Take 5gm of sodium dilute it to 250ml in SMF with dist. Water , take 50 ml of the diluted solution add 2-4 drops of  methyl red indicator.  Then titrate it against IN {approx.}  HCL  Light Pink is the end point. Take this reading as “A” ml. To this solution add 5 gm of sodium fluoride dissolve properly add  6-7 drops of methyl red indicator titrate against IN HCL  appearance of slight pink colour is the end point . Take this reading as “B” ml

DETERMINATION OF IRON (as per Fe)

  • Botanic Potassium Thiocynate ;- dissolve 1.0gm of potassium thiocynate in10ml of water. Add sufficient n-butano to makeup to 100ml. Shake vigorously until the solution is clear.
  • Dilute H2SO4 :- approx.10% 
  • Standard Iron solution : weight 0.702gm of Ferrus Ammonium sulfate. Dissolve in 10ml dilute H2SO4 then make up 1000ml with water. Transfer 10 ml of this solution in 100ml M.Flask and make up 100ml with water. 1ml of this solution is equivalent to 0.01mg of iron 

 

PRCEDURE :

  • Sample Reading: take about 5gm of the sample accurately weighted. Dissolve it in distilled water and make the solution exactly 100ml. Take 10 ml of this solution add 1ml concentrated Nitric acid. Boil the solution and cool. Then transfer it into a nessler cylinder and add 30mg of Ammonium Persulfate and 15 ml of Botanic Potassium Thiocynate solution. Shake for 30 sec and allow the liquid to separate.
  • Blank reading : take 10 ml distilled water. Add 1ml concentrated Nitric acid boil the solution and cool. Then transfer it into a nesseler cylinder and add 30 mg of Ammonium Persulfate and 15 ml of Botanic Potassium Thiocynate solution . Shake for 30 sec. And allow the liquid to separate. Then add Standard Iron Solution until the colour of Butanol Layers in Both Cylinder (Sample & Blank)

Remove Stains With RXSOL Cement Cleaner
Step 1 : Dilute the RXSOL cement cleaner with one part to 10 parts water in a plastic bucket not in metal bucket.
 
Step 2 : Apply the diluted RXSOL cement cleaner  to the stained area using a scrub brush or a plastic sprayer that you can dispose of after ward. Let the solution stand for five minutes and then apply again until the stain has been removed.
 
Step 3 : Rinse thoroughly with a water hose and attached sprayer to clean residue.  Let the area dry for 24 hours.
 
Step 4 : Apply a sealant to your concrete to avoid any future stains.

Preacution: Make sure to spray away from any plants or grass. Water all plants in the nearby area and then cover them for extra protection. If not, the acid can burn the plants.
Read and follow the instructions carefully as per MSDS guideline.
Wear safety goggles, respirator-mask, long-sleeved shirt, pants, rubber boots and acid-resistant gloves.
 
Always keep Full bucket with water just in case the CLEANING solution gets on your skin or eyes. You will need to wash the area immediately.  Also, keep baking soda and lime available to help neutralize the solution strength.
 
If you are planning to use indoors then you need proper ventilation for it can burn your eyes and throat.

Karl Fischer titration is simply a method for quantifying water content of samples. The fundamental principle behind this reaction is based on the Bunsen reaction between compounds such as iodine, sulphur dioxide to form sulphuric acid and hydrogen iodide. Karl Fischer initiated a new method based on Bunsen’s reaction. He discovered that the reaction could be modified for determining water in a non-aqueous system containing an excess of sulphur dioxide in the presence of a suitable base. He used a primary alcohol (methanol) as the solvent and a base (pyridine) as the buffering agent.
 
What is the Karl Fischer Reaction?
(1) CH3OH + SO2 + RN [RNH]SO3CH3
 
Reaction-1:  is where the alcohol reacts with sulphur dioxide (SO2) and base to form an intermediate alkylsulfite salt
 
(2) H2O + I2 + [RNH]SO3CH3 + 2RN [RNH]SO4CH3 + 2[RNH]I
 
Reaction-2: is the oxidation step where the intermediate is then oxidised to an alkylsulphate salt. This reaction consumes water.

Water and iodine are consumed in a 1:1 ratio. Once all of the water present is consumed, the presence of excess iodine is detected by the indicator electrode. That signals the end-point of the titration. The amount of water present in the sample is calculated based on the concentration of iodine in the Karl Fisher titrating reagent and the amount of Karl Fisher Reagent consumed in the titration. Depending on the type of base used the rate of reaction will vary. Classic Karl Fischer reagents contained pyridine, a noxious carcinogen, as the base. Due to its weak basicity the reaction is slow and the end point is not stable. The most common base used today is imidazole where greatest accuracy and repeatability can be achieved. Coulometry is an absolute technique so standardisation of Karl Fischer reagents is not necessary.
 
 
Coulometric Titration Method
In coulometric Karl Fischer, iodine is generated electrochemically in situ during the titration.
The anolyte contains iodide, sulphur dioxide, bases and solvents such as methanol. Electrolytic oxidation occurs when a sample is added to this anolyte.
Iodine is generated at the anode of the titration cell as shown in formula (3)

Stoichiometrically, 1 mole of water will react with 1 mole of iodine, so that 1 milligram of water is equivalent to 10⋅71 coulombs of electricity
Comparison of volumetric and coulometric titration cells.
 
In the volumetric technique, which is used to determine higher water contents generally at levels above 5%, the iodine is introduced via a burette or similar dosing system. For lower water content detection, down to ppm levels, the coulometric technique produces the iodine
in-situ by electrolysis. Coulometry improves the Karl Fischer technique by removing the need for reagent calibration and
provides an absolute result in micrograms of water.

Low reagent usage: multiple samples can be analysed with a single charge of reagent which means less waste and less handling of chemicals, good news for Health and Safety

Karl Fischer KF Reagent A is a general coulometric KF anolyte for use with generator electrodes which incorporate a frit or diaphragm to separate the anode and cathode chambers. Used in conjunction with Reagent C this formulation is supplied in a pack of 8 x 100ml bottles, 8 x 5ml cathode vials, all conveniently located in a single carton.

 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
1. A clean, representative sample of the supporting water should be obtained by means of a sampling can or other suitably designed sampling apparatus. A sample of at least 1 liter will help to ensure that the temperature and density do not change unduly between the collection of the sample and taking of the readings. The depth of water in the container must be sufficient to allow at least 25mm clearance between the bottom of the hydrometer and the bottom of the hydrometer and the bottom of the container. The internal diameter of the container or jar should be at least 50 mm.
2. The number of samples to be taken, also at which depths and at which positions outside the vessel they should be taken, may be important according to the circumstances.
3. Readings may be taken by lowering the hydrometer into a suitably shaped sampling apparatus or by transferring the water to a suitable glass test jar. If a metal or other non-transparent container is used for taking readings, ensure that it is full to the brim. If a glass test jar is used, it should preferably be rinsed first, so as to avoid undue temperature changes. The container or test jar should be shielded from draughts, which may affect the readings.
4. The reading must be taken in the sampling apparatus or glass test jar as rapidly as possible Undue delay in taking the reading could result in temperature changes leading to inaccurate results. In case of doubt, a repeat sample should be taken in order to verify the first observation
5. Ensure that the stem of the hydrometer and the surface of the water sample is free from grease and oil since the accuracy of the readings could be adversely affected
6. Hold the hydrometer vertically by the top of the stem and gently lower it into the water sample until it floats freely
7. Take the hydrometer reading where the level liquid surface meets the graduated scale.

CORRECTIONS TO HYDROMETER READING
1. For ydrometer the appropriate corrections should be applied.
2. For most Draft Survey purposes, no further corrections to the readings are needed.
Reading is most correct when the glass hydrometer is used at a temperature of 15°C. If immersed in water at temperatures higher or lower than 15°C, the instrument will expand or contract so that, for precise laboratory work, a small correction would be applicable However, for Draft Survey work, it should be noted that the ship itself will normally expand or contract according to the temperature of the water in which it is rating. The corrections required to compensate for these changes in volume are of opposite signs and tend to compensate for each other. As it is not practicable to calculate any temperature corrections for the ship, for most Draft Survey purposes no correction should be applied for the expansion or contraction of the hydrometer glass

Magnesium chloride has shown promise as a storage material for hydrogen. Ammonia, which is rich in hydrogen atoms, is used as an intermediate storage material. Ammonia can be effectively absorbed onto solid magnesium chloride, forming Mg(NH3)6Cl2. Ammonia is released by mild heat, and is then passed through a catalyst to give hydrogen gas.

»  Gardening and Horticulture

Because magnesium is a mobile nutrient, magnesium chloride can be effectively used as a substitute for magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) to help correct magnesium deficiency in plants via foliar feeding. It is advisable to use a smaller dose when using magnesium chloride compared to the recommended dose of magnesium sulfate (20 g/L).

» Use in dust and erosion control

Magnesium chloride is one of many substances used for dust control, soil stabilization and wind erosion mitigation.

»   As a Dust Suppressant

Due to its extreme hygroscopic nature and being environmentally-friendly, it is  used in many countries as a dust suppressant or dust binder on dusty roads, unpaved helipads, inside mine shafts and tunnels, open-cast iron ore and coal mines or where volcanic dust could pose a problem, in thickly wooded areas where flying dust could spoil trees etc, by using a solution or MgCl26H20 with water. Application is by simple apparatus of a road tanker with a spray boom.

»  As A De-icing Compound


 
One of the major uses all over the world is as a de-icing compound. Being completely environmentally-friendly, it is used extensively to keep outdoor surfaces around hotels, private homes as well as roads, etc. free of ice, especially at ski-resorts in Europe, Korea and Japan. The other de-icers which have high sodium content can pollute underground water resources and destroy vegetation.


»  Hypomagnesaemia

Extensively used for the treatment of Hypomagnesaemia (Grass Tetany or Grass Staggers. Recent research has proved that this condition, mainly in cattle and sheep follows after winter when a herd is turned out to lush spring grass. Hypomagnesaemia is more noticeable in cattle grazing on pastures which have recently received a dressing of nitrogenous or potash fertilizer. By spraying a solution of magnesium chloride on grass or even directly on the animal or mixed into the cattle feed, this condition is prevented and has proved to be extremely beneficial to livestock. Magnesium Chloride being environmentally-friendly, will not damage either grasslands or the cattle.  

»  Industrial Flooring

 It is used in industrial floorings, ship decks, railway coach floorings,
 hospital floors and for aircraft hangar floors, ammunition factory floors, missile silos and underground armament factories and bunkers. The famous Siegfried Line of WW-II on the border of Germany and France had its entire floor rendering of this cement.


»  Medical Benefits

Magnesium Chloride is used in the manufacture of Magnesium Hydroxide Mg(OH)2 for further preparation of antacids for relieving stomach ailments and ulcers.


From research by well-known French surgeon, Prof. Pierre Delbet, MD, as reported by Dr. Walter Last, who himself claims that "magnesium chloride is nothing short of a miracle mineral in its healing effect on a wide range of diseases as well as in its ability to rejuvenate the ageing body". Prof. Delbet's list includes diseases of the digestive tract such as colitis and gall bladder problems, Parkinson's disease, tremors and muscle cramps, acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts and itching skin, impotence, prostatic hypertrophy, cerebral andcirculatory problems,asthma, hay fever, urticaria and anphylactic reactions. Hair and nails became stronger and healthier, and patients have more energy.  

In recent years Dr. Vergini and others have confirmed these earlier results and have added more diseases to the list of successful uses, acute asthma attacks, shock, tetanus, herpes zoster, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, optic neuritis, rheumatic diseases, many allergic diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome and beneficial effects in cancer therapy. In all these cases magnesium chloride had been used giving much better results than other magnesium compounds.  

It is proved that many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease can be overcome with high magnesium supplementation, shaking can be prevented and rigidity eased.  


»  Magnesium for the heart:   

Adequate levels of magnesium are essential for the heart muscles. It was found that those who die from heart attacks have very low magnesium but high calcium levels in their heart muscles. Patients with coronary heart disease who have been treated with large amounts of magnesium survived better than those with other drug treatment. Magnesium dilates the arteries of the hearts and lowers cholesterol and fat levels.


» As a Flame Retardant

One of the most important uses of Magnesium Hydroxide today in Europe and America is as a flame retardant in polymers. Recent regulation in the West to ban or curtail the use of halogenated retardants (considered carcinogenic) has increased the demand for Mg(OH)2 retardants, going up to several thousand tonnes per year. Mg(OH)2 withstands up to 340°C and has been used as an effective flame retardant particularly for poly- oleofins. The Asahi Glass company in Tokyo manufacture a range of magnesium hydroxides for flame retardant applications and are potential customers for magnesium chloride. The main suppliers in Europe are Kyowa Chemical Industry (Kagowa) of Japan.


» Impact-proof, fire-retardant, anti-static flooring

 Another major use is in the preparation of oxychloride cements (3MgO MgCl2 11H2O) which are made up in carefully balanced proportions of Magnesium Chloride and a dry mix consisting of calcined magnesium oxide (MgO) or Magnesite, with fillers and other aggregates depending upon the requirement. These cements are fast setting and form a dense stone like product of smooth texture which is very strong, impact resistant, fire retardant and non sparking (antistatic).

Magnesium oxychloride Cement (3MgO MgCl2> 11H2>O) is a tough stone-like, fire-proof compound that can be used for light or heavy floorings. Having a tremendous load bearing capacity. It can withstand vibrations from heavy iron wheel movement without any trace of cracks or fissures. It is ideal for coating wooden floors, theatre stages and renovating old lofts. Oil and grease stains can be rubbed off easily without leaving any marks on it.
